Daily Dose of Pop Culture? Try Google Trends…
This is my site Written by on July 16, 2009 – 11:09 pm

I’m not sure if I go on Google Trends for pure entertainment, or if it’s really helpful to my business. Go visit it now and you’ll see what I mean. It’s a playground of pop culture because it lets you tap into the collective… think about how many times Google is used during the day. The keywords that make the top 100 see a good amount of traffic.

I know what’s on TV on the weekends. People must look at the listings on the channel and hit Google to grab information. I know when notable things happen - for example, I realized a few hours ago that the 2009 Emmy Nominees were released.

So, that’s the entertainment side of things. But it is interesting from a business perspective. Every now and then, a keyword shows up that pertains to one of my blogs pops up. Several months ago “oDesk reviews” was in the top 100 because it had been mentioned on TV (was it Oprah, I forget). I used that keyword and wrote a post. To this day, it’s still one of the most popular keywords.

If you think about it, this is one of the best ways to determine what the collective thought is in the nation. What are people thinking about, curious about, interested in? You get a current (I think it’s hourly) report. Visit it several times a day and you’ll start to notice patterns. A good portion of the searches that happen over the weekend, for example, are entertainment related.

Once you observe the trends, you can think about how to use it. Sometimes using a popular keyword can really pay off. Other times, it doesn’t. It’s up to you. This is simply a tool that you can use if you want. Otherwise, feel free to use it just for entertainment. :)
